Holly’s ‘how to network at conferences and events’
Step 1 of 3, before the event
The most important thing to remember in any situation is that networking is an art not a science, it is completely dependent on your personal confidence and experience. Do not be disheartened if you find it daunting at first – the key is to keep pushing yourself to network.
Choosing the right event is key. Choose an event where the subject is one that you know well - this will enable you to think on your feet. You never want to end up at an event where you don’t know what you are talking about, it will be glaringly obvious. It is very important that you pick an event that will suit you as a professional and your particular networking strengths/weaknesses. If you are a nervous person or new to networking, stick to bigger, less personal events, where you can blend in.
Do your research in advance. You have to determine the tone of the event before you go, not just when you turn up as it will affect the way you approach people the moment you walk in the door. Know the status of the other people attending, whether it is an event for CEOs or marketing managers or more junior level personnel. Your initial meet and greets will then change accordingly.
